Thread: Razor oil

Im new to straight razors and was wondering is there much difference between razor oil and say a standard sewing machine type oil other than maybe the color,and would a different type of oil work to protect a razor

I use gun oil on mine. Many use mineral oil. Just make sure the blade is dry before applying

I have used reel oil, gun oil, and now use mineral oil. The mineral oil seems to bind just a bit better to the metal and is of course food-grade (it is a laxative) so I can't imagine it could cause any EXTERNAL irritation.

You can get baby oil for a $1.25 in a large bottle at most dollar stores. It's just mineral oil with fragrance added to it. That is what I use.

I use Barricade gun oil, one drop will do a razor

Ballistol, a German multi-purpose oil that also performs well as gun oil, is often used and recommended for stainless steel razors.

The unique (licorice) smell may take some time getting used to, but Ballistol has kept all my razors corrosion free so far. With a small (SRD) sponge type oil applicator the smell is less noticeable.

In North America and Europe it is available through the Internet (e.g. Amazon).


I have found that some (e.g. baby) oils sold in drugstores tend to form beads when applied to the blade and do not form a homogeneous film.
Gun oils like Ballistol appear to perform better in this respect as it was designed to create a protective film on metal surfaces to prevent corrosion.

Renwax on the blade and a drop of silicone oil on the pivot, if I am storing or shipping them they get wrapped in VCI anti corrosion paper.

Just be sure to use the silicon based variety and not the water based or the "warming" formulation.
