Default A. F. Bannister & Co. Manganese Razor

I picked up a new razor today. Near perfect condition, looks like it's never been used to shave. I believe the scales are tortoise shell styled celluloid. Does anyone have any other information about the razor?

They are Celluloid molded scales, They clean up very well and are somewhat brittle so go easy. You made a nice catch there!

    Nice find.

A.F. Bannister started out in Sheffield as a kid in the 1850s. In the 1880s he moved to New Jersey, USA and started his razor company. The place burned down in 1914. A.F. Bannister and company is listed as 1884 to 1915 in Goins.

Maybe someone that knows more will be along to give you more information.

I also found the following link. My razor looks identical, down to the scale design. Are they the same? How do I tell celluloid from tortoise shell?

The person operating that web site is a known schmuck. He has many "Sold" listings at very high prices so the razors, and razor shaped objects, he offers at inflated prices seem cheap. There are many tales of woe from those who have dealt with him.
You done good! and your razor is a winner in my book!
Have it professionally honed and enjoy the use of it for a lifetime.

    Happy New Year!

Go forward with the idea that you received a very nice razor for a fair price!
