Justin
I've seen a couple guys doing industrial looking razors but the prices are prohibitive, but if your interested in spending 500 or more let me know and I'll find the names for you.
How's life treating you Justin?
Mark Avery
Everything's good Mark ---- $500 bucks is a little expensive (for most) ---- I was just thinking about how it might be interesting to carry the straight razor system into more of a modern -- more cutting edge --- arena. Everything from the the strops to the razors --might get even more people interested --- kind of a merging of the old and new. I just happen to like that certain look (hard for me to define) that one might call industrial --- kind of a mean, unrefined, metallic look.
How you doing Mark (and the family)? ---- keeping it real in California?
Justin
Darrell has posted here and has some interesting designs. Beautiful but I prefer a different look (e.g. Robert W, Maestro).
Cheers

yeah --- I don't know if "modern" is the right word for what I like --- some modern looks are too streamlined, minimalistic and "effeminate" --- what I'm talking about is kind of a bare bones , utilitarian look as well ---- I don't know enough to define what I like --- I just know it when I see it .
Justin
I kind of like the modern look, but if you got too into it, then you'll just have a razor that looks similar in style to the fusions, which would be a little sacrilegious in my opinion. Still, those Darrel Ralph razors are might impressive, as well as the knives and daggers and swords, oh my!
I know exactly what you mean!! In most areas of my life I am completely self taught ( including straight razor shaving)! I get a little helpful hand here and there. a little friendly advice, but on the whole I am self taught. As a result of being self taught I don't always have the words to adequately describe what I am trying to get across, as someone who was specifically schooled in a particular endeaver would! An unfortunate consequence is that it makes it difficult to teach others when needed.
I think there is a difference between modern and industrial. I like the idea of an industrial look a lot. To me industrial design is more about the materials used then the finish of them. There is a more unadorned look. Clean edges and sharp, contrasting lines. I would love to have a razor like that.

If you can, teaching yourself is the best way ---- I kind of have issue with authority figures and by-and-by usually end up teaching myself (due to my personality). But really I can't understand how it can be any other way -- you have a brain, the essentials of communication (reading and such), books etc, and a will and you're on your way. Plus when you teach yourself you tend to make mistakes more which is the best way to learn. Just believe in yourself mon ami . ;)
Justin
Well, I am a designer by trade, so I need to have a clear idea of these sorts of things. I however, have been educated in these matters. That, and I generally like contemporary and industrial designs.
Matt
I also agree. I have been educated in design, but my formal education was always in the way of learning by doing. We were given assignments and then told to figure out how to do them. If we had trouble we could always come to the teachers, and they would critique our work and tell us how to improve certain things, but generally we learned by doing.
As far as web design, I am completely self taught.
Matt
Yeah --- I understand --- it is nice to have some fundamentals defined by people in the know ---- plus, as you've mentioned I've been in embarrassing situations where I knew the mechanics of something but my terminology wasn't up to par --- it can be hard convincing people you really know when you don't recognize the exact name of something ---- that insecure feeling I can appreciate as well --- but it's the sign of an active, working, thoughtful brain;). (Intelligence gives you much to consider and worry about).
Justin
I think the materials are industrial but how about them MOP gold lip etc. So I'd say he combines industrial with something else.
I may get flames for this but a quote from Tim Gun (Project Runway show) summarizes my opinion: "I appreciate what you're doing. Do I love it - no." No offense meant whatsoever, I just am looking for something else
Now, industrial can be bad in my book too - I do love hand-made craftsman individual works (the opposite of industrial in many senses)
Cheers
Ivo
Always happy to help :D
But seriously, this is why we were taught by doing at my school. Our teachers alway encouraged us to figure out our own ways of doing things. To break the rules and expand current ideas. We were always taught and encouraged to be the idea guys and not just mindless designers for somebody else's ideas. Many designers are not capable of free thinking, and become lackies for big marketing firms. Some ad guy comes up with all the ideas, and they just make them visual. Where is the creativity in that? I hope I never become one of said drones.
Matt
For me this isn't a knock on formal education ---- it's about an attitude -- take full advantage of your resources --teachers, equipment, etc but in the end no one can teach you without your involvement ---- you will teach yourself ultimately in the end -- people can point you in a direction but it's all you
Am I sounding like fricken Thumbelina again ? ---- (you hurt my feelings)
James (I knew you would like this thread) --- I guess even when you were doing your post graduate work, your instructors didn't hold your hand --- they pointed you in a certain direction but mostly it was up to you --- kind of funny how that works --- I see a certain equivalence between maturity, educational sophistication, and the ability to work on your own and largely teach yourself ---
Justin (one bad ass Thumbelina)
Don't worry!!
After reading your post I realized mine might be misunderstood!!
Truth be known I am not fond of the type of formal education that stuffs you with knowledge like a sausage skin without true understanding, but if one is mature enough and astute enough one can learn anything from any body any where!!!
And I think that's the final word --- motivational speakers forum this has become ;)
( There's only so much you can say about razors anyway)
What was the original title of this thread? Oh yes ---- Words of Encouragement by Thumbelina and Friends.
Thumbelina my butt. ;)
This is Justin signing off for tonight
