Thread: Nowill and Sons

I've come across a Nowill and Sons razor, stamped as 'J Nowill and Sons, 17 Meadow Street, Sheffield' also with a cross keys logo and a D (pictures attached, if I've got it right!). I've done a bit of research and it seems that it's made by John Nowill, around 1839/40, as this seems to be the short period of time he was based in Meadow Street for. Anyone able to shed a bit more light on it?

Looks like you came across a live ebay auction for this razor? Now we all know about it! best practice to do this via pm's. Nevertheless the dating seems right to me, that said the blade of this razor got some major issues, scales look very good.

It was more from an interest point of view that I asked about it, not so much that I was thinking about buying it.

I got this nice 13/16"+ John Nowill Yesterday and it shaves like a dream, its full hollow and very thin grounded with anice belly.
It was good to hone but as the steel is very hard it took its time but i become incredible sharp, especially the kind of sharpness i prefer, not to mild but also not to aggressive.
As the Blade seems very lightweight to me (maybe because of the grind in combination with the thin spine in relation to the blade width) shaving was a bit unusual at first but the mix of scratching and ringing noises had been just like music :-)

I have one that’s etched Warranted Nade And Ground In Sheffield so mine was also made between 1851 and 1891! The one I have looks fantastic and it shakes fantastic and really holds an edge. Hang on to that baby and shave with it. And remember no matter what you’re selling, a razor a house, whatever, it’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay you for it. It’s not worth the appraisal it’s worth whatever someone will pay, period!
