Thanked: 0advice on henkel
Hi everyone, i wanted to get some advice on a henkels vintage razor for sale. It has a covered (ivory) tang and monkey tale. got the twin symbol on the tang. Its got ivory scales. The scales dont have the twins on the scales. mainly if the twins were not on the scales then they might be not original? Does anyone have any advice on this as the tang has the twins. Thanks Dazed ps this is about 100. for this particular razor

Without seeing the razor it is very difficult to give advice. It's a matter of the razor itself being in good shape meaning the spine and edge and overall condition. The scales aren't that important. They can always be changed.
We don't do valuations. You need to look at what similar items are going for and decide if you think it's worth the asking price. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 4827I don't recall seeing any logos on ivory scales. A little scrimshaw every now and again but most ivory scales are plain. The fact that it has ivory scales whether or not they were original is a bonus as far as I can see, however if you want to shave with it is is all about the blade. It is an excellent brand, so if the blade is in good shape it sounds very desirable to me.

Did the seller send photos, or post them online ? Check and see if the scales are pinned with washers/ferrules or if they are just flush pinned to the scales. Nine times out of ten, if they have washers around the pins they ain't ivory IME. A lot of people see ivoriod (celluloid that looks like ivory) and assume that it is the real McCoy. Then again, I could be wrong, I was wrong once before.

Appears to me to have collars around the pins, so it is probably celluloid on the tang as well. You mention the seller said it is 'shave ready'. Does he hone razors routinely ? IOW, if it is just a guy who sells antiques, someone who doesn't shave and hone himself, he might think an average razor is 'sharp'. Just saying, trust ....... but verify.
