Default Interesting Blade Shape...Advantages or Disadvantages?

    Hello all,

I am constantly browsing various places to buy straight razors, and I came across this blade. I have yet to see anything like it, and was wondering if anyone was familiar with why they would design a blade in this way. I think it looks cool, but I am concerned if the design will present issues during future honing.

If you know anything about this design, or have had experience with one, I would love to hear from you.

    Thanks guys!

    Bellied Hollow...

They're are actually quite common, it is often easier to "Feel" them rather then "See" them

There is another possibility, hard to tell from your pic

    But here is more info

It is a bellied hollow and I have not had a problem honing them so far. There is a thread here http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...ed-hollow.html .

Ah, the good ol' bellied hollow. Thanks guys!

So should the asymmetry in the "belly", be of any concern? I don't want to get a seemingly cool blade that will cause problems in the future. I create enough of those on my own.

    Called double belly I believe.
If I am not wrong they were made with two different size wheels. I have seen theories, that it was not easy to get the hollow grind for the size with one wheel only so a large radius wheel was used to create more of a wedge grind, then a smaller radius wheel was used to get the hollow grind. Not sure if this is true or not.

Here some examples of the same.

This one is very subtle but it is there

This one has more pronounced double belly

The line in the middle of the blade is a result of the double belly

A lot of my hollow grounds have them. I usually see the line on the blade and can feel it with my fingers. On occasion I have seen it like you have in your OP. Never had a problem honing with them and find that I like the added strength it seems to give to the blade when shaving.

That razor reminds me of a high heel shoe. Cool lines.

I see what you are concerned about with the asymmetry of the belly. I have not run into that and on second look have not seen an edge that close to the belly either. Always wondered what would happen if you honed up into the belly and that may be the cause of the asymmetry you are seeing. Is there more spine wear on one side than the other? I will let the more experienced honers answer your question.
