Thanked: 0Your opinions on these razor manufacturers please
Hi all was wondering if anybody could offer any opinions on a few makes of razors I've found for sale near where I live. Haven't looked to much at the prices yet as I'll worry about that if you guys think they are worth owning I've included as much info as I currently have and thanks in advance for any help
the brands are as follows:-
Timor 153 (3/4 Sheffield steel hollow ground Germany (vintage)
S Hibbert & Son Sheffield steel "skipper" (vintage)
McQueen & Son Newcastle (vintage)
Path Finder Titanium coated blade (new)
Ford & Medley 333 Sheffield (vintage)
Krauss real German made and Ground (vintage)
Gotta Hamburg Sheffield steel German ground (vintage)

Thanked: 3164Most of the makes are well regarded - excepting the titanium coated monstrosity, but the make is of secondary importance. You need to take the state of the blade, scales, into consideration. Even a well regarded make can be valueless if it is all dinged and bashed up and corroded.
Its of no value, but if it was me I would be checking the condition of the Timor and Gotta - if the Timor is really a vintage timor - be warned!
Regards,
Neil

Thanked: 3227Hard to say without a photo if any of the vintage are worth owning as it usually depends on the condition they are in. Generally, most vintage blades in good condition will make sold shavers. The one I might be concerned about is the new one. If it is the set I looked at for 26.45 GBP/40.36 USD on the net. Just seems way too cheap price wise for an outfit that includes a new straight razor, honing pastes and a strop. Take a look around this site Introduction to razors , as you are in England, for an idea of what a quality new straight razor will set you back never mind a quality strop to boot.

Thanked: 3227Sorry, the photos are really too small to try and comment on the blades. Much larger would be better.

If the 'bay photos are the razors, then my answer would be:
The Gotta seems to show through the bevel pitting near the toe and some along the edge. Looks like a quick cleanup was given to make it sell. I would ask the seller for before clean up photos.
The Timor, if cheap, might be a fair chance.

OP choice completely. Taped spines are a way to hone a blade with poor geometry on an other wise good blade. Could be the blade is of enough quality to hone the regular way and I have found a couple that , though hone worn, turned into good shavers. The bevel can tell a story..look carefully.
Cheap though!

The only one that I own is a vintage Gotta, and it's in much better condition than the one in the pic,and I think it shaves very well, the funny thing is, I bought it even though someone was trying to pass it off as a DD by putting those scales on it,but my face likes it better than the ducks I have tried
