Thanked: 0Blade too narrow?
Gents,
I have 4 of my Grandfather's straight razors.
First is a Hoffritz 6/8". I have honed and it shaves nicely.
Second is a Salamander 4/8" I have honed and it shaves OK.
Third is a Wester Bros#29 7/16" and
Fourth is Genco President 7/16".
The last two razors show slight signs of honing. My question is, Are these blades abnormally narrow, maybe due to edge repair? I'm new to honing, but couldn't get a decent edge until I placed tape over the backs. Then after stropping I removed the tape and got a decent shave. Are the blades too narrow and am I stuck taping and stropping?
Thanks,
Tony

Welcome, Tony
Those blades should still be ok. You probably just need to set the bevel on them a little better. Just MHO.

I like narrow blades but draw the line at 4/8s. I just find that narrower than that and my fingers start to get in the way while shaving. I have a DD Dwarf which is probably between 3/8s and 4/8s and its just hard to use but I have no problem honing and stropping.
