Thanked: 17Idea of age on a Classifieds razor
I picked up the 6/8 Wostenholm frame back from the classifieds:
Message - Straight Razor Place Classifieds
I've already shaved with it twice and am really tickled with it.
It's a Washington Works IXL in good shape with horn scales. Labeled "Sheffield" only so it's pre 1891 at the least.
I've done some basic research and one article suggested it might be somewhere between 1830 and 1870. The article said that they, the framebacks from Wostenholm, were most popular around 1850. I've also seen reprints of ads from 1910 showing a different type of frame back.
Anyway, looking for some solid information on age.
Thanks, love this place.

Thanked: 24Lack of "England" stamp says pre 1891, location of Washington works says post 1848. It would have been Rockingham works before that.

Thanked: 17Thanks appa69. That is one of the cool things about dating razors. It's like a puzzle with the sum of the parts, or lack thereof giving you a date range.

Thanked: 17Here is one of the articles I've read. I'm still looking for the one that spoke more about the framebacks.
STRAZORS.com - all about classic razors - George Wostenholm & Son, Sheffield.

Your razor is with removable spine. Similar razors you can find in the Wostenholm catalog of 1885.
