Thanked: 1Pocket Knife Razor??
Has anyone ever seen of a modern razor that is more like a pocket knife? What I mean is something with a shorter (like 3") and thicker wider handle that folds compactly and could even lock when open. Straight Razors seem universally to be about 5.5" long with about 2.75" of cutting edge, set in 5.5" handles. Is it the manufacturing process that requires the blank that long? Or because of the dexterity the design provides to the user by the length, jimps and tail?
Far from me to reinvent the wheel, but while considering to grind my own blanks, my design mind started to wonder out the box.

Thanked: 1184Okay I have a nice pocket razor/knife. Never used it to shave with because of the steel. Made by a very reputable knife maker in Japan. The thing doesn't feel right in the hand for shaving and it scares the hell out me when it snaps closed like a regular pocket knife :<0) I don't think I would want it as sharp as a razor for that reason alone. It's heavy and unbalanced really. I like the Pachmayr style scales but they are too fat. I thought it might be nice to throw in the backpack or saddle bag for 2 or 3 day trips. Still might hone it and see if it shaves someday. Resolved the pack razor thing with a better combo thing.
Not trying to discourage you just giving my observations.
It reminds me of a Kreiger or some such blade but it is a quality piece of work. Leaning more to the knife side.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 1Thx Pups & Scare. Wow both you. Your examples are close to what I imagine. I don't visit the knife area on Ebay or personally collect them, and always amazed at prices on older knives. Anyway I was going to refine the question, as it could be that the shorter thicker handle also would make honing or stropping more difficult in turning it over either way. Well, if I go ahead with experiments in grinding etc, I will return here. Until then my design (known only to me and my trusted assistant) will remain top secret.
