    Default A visit to Sheffield

An interesting article about a visit to Sheffield published in The Schenectady Cabinet, January 25, 1826. Visiting Shepherd & Marsh, John Barber and Rodgers and sons.

I'm rather hesitant to ask but what do they mean by the blooming couple "who had just been bending at the altar of hymen"? On second thoughts, don't answer that.

Thanks for posting this article, Martin103.

I wonder if any of my Sheffield razors are counterfeit as it seems to have been problem enough for Barber to put out advertisements warning against counterfeits.

On a related note I asked a co-worker a few years ago who was a native of Germany where Solingen was and he didn't know. I was able to find a Solingen on a map. I was left wondering if this was where the razors were made or if the word "soligen" meant something other than a location in the manufacture of razors. The English article is pretty clear in stating that Sheffield is where the razors were made.

Solingen didn't get the name "City of Blades" for nothing. It is where many German razors were and still are made.

    Great article.
Even back in the time some were involved in making fakes of reputable razor bands.

Thanks for posting that! It was great reading and getting insight into how people talked and behaved at the time.
