Unless you are going to pull it apart and totally restore it, you don't want to touch the pins. Clean it up and get it shaving. This is a slow trip, there is plenty of time to decide what you want to do with it. I have read here the horn scales like a good soak in neetsfoot oil.

Just talked to a friend that keeps horses and cows. He takes great care of his animals and has offered me 2 Cups ( 1/2 Liter ) for free of neatfoot oil.
