    Default Wife's Grandfathers Razors

My wife just received 3 of her grandfathers razor. I thought it would be very cool if we could get them cleaned up and shave ready.

The first is what I believe to be a Wester Bros Gun Metal

The next is a Genco. I have no idea after that. The scales on this one are very cool.

I'd like to get these shave ready but not sure how to go about. You see I'm only 4 days using my razor. I thought using his would be nostalgic. She also receive his cavalier brush along with his WWII uniform brush. Both are still useable. The cavalier brush just needed a good cleaning.

If someone sees these and has more information that would be great or perhaps point us to someone who might be able to help get them shave ready.

    Thanks

Welcome aboard,,, it's nice to have heirlooms. All of those are good brands. They are in a bit of rough condition, though, but again, many are. You can start by reading in the links provided below on how to clean them up & if you choose to, hone them yourself,,, I would probably send them out to be honed.

You say that you are 4 days into shaving,, what do you use?

I picked up a Dovo Carpe Diem from SRD...The name is says it all for me. I thought the same thing...send them out. I was checking around but it seemed some people were concerned with pitting and the rust.

Shop them around, there are many members who restore here,,, if they cannot be brought to shave ready,,, then they can be cleaned up & make a very interesting display , with a history attached. Your imagination is the limit,,,

The Wester Bros has bone scales. The blade, however does not hold much promise for shaving without extensive work. Wester Bros were made in Gemany and, later, in the U.S. as to WWII.
Same goes for the Little Chief, which was made for a barber's supply, most likely in Germany. It has molded celluloid scales which look quite nice. The blades on both seem frowning and worn. Pretty much done by my eye.
The Genco looks a likely shaver.
Since they are heirlooms, I could recommend the former two as a display. Get that Genco into rotation!
Of course, proper (or close) blades could be found for the other two, no doubt. Up to you.

A lot of info on Genco (or Geneva Cutlery) can be found in this thread beginning on post 148!

Really cool acquisition! Hand me downs are the best because of the personal history. There are some people here that do awesome restorations if you search around. Genco is a very good blade and it looks like it will clean up well. Enjoy them!

Hand we have quite a list of guys who do rests work , but Toms eye is pretty good maybe restore the genco by sending out to someone and have them hone it , your too new for that still. Good luck in the heirlooms. Tc

Nice, they all have solid blades and the scales look like their in good shape. He must have been careful handling them.

I agree with Tom. You could find some on the bay for probably a good deal, some with broken scales but good blades & win 'em for next to nothing. There wouldn't be anything wrong with replacing a couple of blades on some heirlooms!
