horn scales what size they should be?
hi everyone,
i recently found a blade without scales. it's in good condition so i thought to make it horn scales. yesterday i finished to cut and put them on the blade. this is my first scales which i did by myself so i could realize while i was stropping it that the scales were too thick (about 2 or 2,5mm). in the night i tried with sandpaper to get them thinner but i think it's still not so ok. (well better than earlier).
so i would like to ask what widness they should be and do you think it's possible to make them thinner without get them off (i mean while they are on the blade)?
thanks

Thanked: 4826There is no exact answer. They should be only a slight amount wider than the tang, in order for them to be comfortable in your hand while stropping. they of course can get wider much faster so they can cover the blade when closed. Unless you are talking about the thickness of the material. Because I do not do any of my scales in metric I have to convert it to imperial. If your scales material is that thick it would likely feel a little off on a smaller blade. I have no idea how you could thin it with the blade attached. It sounds dangerous. I would unpin the blade and work the scales that way. I find it I use double sided tape and put them together it is easier to get them uniform.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Thanked: 13245Depends on the razor, the scales should balance
On bigger heavier razors mine run about .105-.115" or 2.667 mm - 2.921
On lighter razors they are about .090" or 2.286 mm
So basically more then 2 mm and less them 3mm depending on the balance
For reference 1/8 which is where we buy much of the material is 3.175 mm

I understand that. I'm just not sure if the blade lost the width. So I'll simply give its size; from its pin hole to the point it's 12 cm and its width is 18mm but I'm not sure if its width is original or it lost after resorted.
But for this size (from the pin hole to point of the razor) it should be a scale for 6\8's or absolutely 5/8 scales?

No fixed sizes here, only need to be long enough to allow for a wedge and pivot. And cover the blade edge
There is a pdf of scales if you search itSaved,
