Default questions on values and research materials

What resources are available to find history on some of these old razors? There isn't a ton on the internet except from users on this site. Are there any books, buyers guides, etc...? How does one assign a value to an old straight? Any hints?

Well that is a bit of a complicated question. There are a few contributing factors that effect price. The first is the obvious market. Prices move up and down all the time. I have no idea why. So when you do your research for values is part of it. The overall condition of the razor is a giant one. There are a lot of small things that contribute to that one as well. A razor can be new old stock and infill original condition. Next would be all original but not much use and no wear showing. These things go on in a pattern and I doubt you need them listed. There is rare, but rare gets tricky, because it could be a known rare razor for many reasons and just because there are not that many around does not make it worth more. There are several little known and rare blades that sell for peanuts, and that starts to get back to the market. Now it is a little complicated because you have to find sales to get the numbers. Not a all razor sales are going have good pictures to show wether or not they are a suitable comparison. They quickest way to find comparison is most often sold listings searches on ebay. In order to be accurate you need to find more than one and it needs to be in the same or similar condition and model. It works well with the more common and popular razors. I have a few that took me a while just to find a poor comparison. Sometimes you will have one that is rare and popular. An example of that would be a Palmera 14. They tend to disappear fast when they are listed for sale and they do not come up very often. Both rare and popular. The historical information I will leave to others because I am really not very effective at it.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
