Thanked: 12help identifing old razor
I was at an estate sale yesterday, and they had a straight razor looking object. It was a straight, but had an open comb like a DE, and took replaceable blades that looked to be longer than regular DE blades. The scales were white, looked like bone or ivory, but probably plastic or celluloid. It was in a red box. I wish I had bought it or took a pic of it, but I was too busy looking at cast iron. I might go back later today and see if it is still there. I think they were asking 16 bucks, so it should be half off now. Any ideas?

I think it was one of these. Can you still find blades for something like this?

Thanked: 7They are called shavettes. They are still sold at beauty supply stores, though they look a bit different. You should still be able to get disposable blades.

Alot of times I've seen them used for thinning hair during hair cuts. I personally have had this done more than once

I've got a couple of those. I also have a Durham Duplex DE safety razor that looks just like that except its cutter head is mounted perpendicular on a handle just like any other DE razor. I haven't used either of them not knowing for sure where to get the blades.

Thanked: 433I've never been able to find Durham Duplex blades for shaving, the size is still made but they are for hardware use (I think carpet cutter blades)

"Urham Uplex" makes me chuckle. The D's are perhaps a bit stylized, but I don't think it's too hard to figure out that they are actually letters.
These things seem to be very cheap, and I have never seen any good blades for them. Granted, I have never looked. Maybe you could find some NOS ones, or maybe something modern fits (or could be made to fit).
