Personally this razor screams Sheffield to me, 1830-1860. I believed this razor was made by Joel Rose of Sheffield, Joel is listed as a cutlery manufacturer in 1833 in the Directory of Sheffield, and later as Joel Rose and Co, Pen & pocket Knifes and cutlery distributor in 1837 in the same directory.

Like Engine46 mentioned it is more the probable that Joel was a descendant of John Rose Jr & Joseph Rose of Wadsley since Joel is mentioned in some directories from that region as well. The dating seems right for this razor.

I believe he did some honing on the J. Rose also. He is in the early stages of honing and doesn't do a bad job but if you plan on shaving with it you may want to have it professionally honed unless you are a proficient honer. You might test shave it first, it could already be shave ready.......
so the razor was a lab rat , thanks for the little history and don't worry about honing it my stones can take care of that

I see, thanks for the great info though.

Thanks Martin, it will be very cool if the razor is dated back to 1830-1860 that's around 155-185 years ago. Have you tried or seen similar one before ?

Looks very Sheffield to me, the steel interaction with the stones like a Sheffield Razors, although crudely restored the blade is in good condition.

Hope this helps in the identification progress...

Looks like you got the pick of the bunch on offer. Been re-scaled somewhere along the line, you can replace scales, but you can't replace steel. Very nice.

Rather than reply with Martin's post #21, I will say this to cut down on space. I think he is right on what he found & the razor does have a Sheffield look to it.

I just got off the phone with the guy who did the scales on that J. Rose razor. He bought it because of the unusual spine and had a W&B with the same spine. He said he held them up beside each other and the razors were identical twins, so, I would feel safe saying that the J. Rose is a Sheffield razor.
