Unknown razor
I just got this off Ebite and would like to know if anyone has any info on it.
Seller thinks it is from the mid 1800's. It came in a Wade & Buttcher Sheffield coffin and fits in it well. Nice shape on the box.
Any pointers would be great thanks for your time.

Thanked: 9I had a Greaves with similar notches (now C Utz has is) but it was a different blade shape + a diamondback.
Also saw another Greaves much like the one pictured.
Currently have a Mappin Brthers with very similar lines.
I like the design. Much
Cheers

The spine is angled, not rounded. Not markings other that the one pictured.
I put it on the 8k last night to get a feel for the steel. That long curved edge is a bit of a challange compared to square and round points, that have nice flat edges
This bugger is HEAVY conpared to my DD's haha.

Are there any reference books out there that may have this in it? Or link to a website?
I like to know the history of items in my "collections". More to the point I would like to know how careful I should be with it. If it has a good history and has some collectability I would take a lot more care of it vs something that can be found for a dime a dozen (so to speak).

I'm still trying to find info on this razor, I'm getting attached to it as well
I noticed that when opening the razor, the pivet pin seems to be worn as I get a touch of play in the opening. No side to side movement at all though. Also noticed that the wedge seems to be soft, maybe lead, not sure.
I'm still getting used to trying to hone it. That curve is throwing me off a bit Playing with the idea of sending it to the shop that will be rebuilding my DD Dwarf when it gets there. See what happens.

those old wedges are all loose
I have taken apart a few old wedges and it almost definitely isn't hinge pin wear but rather an over sized hole from being hot punched while the razor was being made.
Consider the state of the art of high speed steel technology back then and I'm sure you can imagine why it was done this way.
I think you'll like it, even if you do have Ducks.
If your beard looks anything like your avatar the first shave should be a welcome change !!
Another nice thing about wedges is that they don't shatter if you drop them.
I'm just sayin.......

Whoot, finally getting somewhere. I think these two pics are showing the same thing...
this razor is a wade and butcher with a very early tang stamping , it has a crown over a VR and the words Wade Butcher( see close up pic) it was manufactured in the reign of Queen Victoria and dates in the early 1830-1840
Anyone else see the same thing? Anyone know where I could look up the crown stamps in this series?Last edited by DwarvenChef; 05-28-2007 at 05:31 AM.

Digging around I have put together several pics that may be the key to this buggers ID. Marshes and shepperd sure looks close, what do you all think?
Thanks Jim for the pointerLast edited by DwarvenChef; 06-06-2007 at 02:07 AM.
