Cell rot indeed,
I just obtained a Bartmann High class with beautiful scales, but the blade had all the visual marks of cell rot, so I had to get rid of the scales, no mercy! I don't want any of that around my blades
I once read somewhere that the darker / black scales are less prone to develop cell rot, hence why I prefer black scales, and they always look good tooLast edited by TristanLudlow; 11-07-2015 at 11:12 PM.

I've gone over it w/ polish around 20X now. The heel is the hardest part to get.
Might not be a total loss but I'll have to use more elbow grease to get more rust off.

You do intend to trash the scales, don't you?
The blade does look like it can be restored but a new bevel will be the only way to tell.If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

I think you are missing the point that has been made above. The scales ARE your problem. The cell rot is what tarnished your blade and will CONTINUE to do so if not removed . You have put in some sweat to get the blade cleaned up but those scales will continue to be it's enemy.

Unpin that blade!
The blade will be mush easier to finish cleaning out of the scales, and they are probably the problem anyways! If you don't feel like taking on a new scale project there are plenty of people here who can help you out.

Thanked: 3215Yes it is cell rot, the scales are eating the blade and will ruin the blade completely. Once it starts it will not stop and will affect any other blades stored near it.
Look at the edge with magnification, you will find it has eaten the edge, you will probably have to remove a portion of the edge to get to good steel.
As said remove the scales ASAP, make a tracing if you want to replicate them, then toss in the trash. If you’re not keeping scales a file will unpin them quickly.

done about as much polishing as I can do w/ this fine polish. You can still see areas where the blade was stained. Looks like theres a spot that got to the edge near the tip where there is damage of some kind as it shows through on both sides.
Will trace scales, as some users have mentioned and remove blade from them and seek services from one of the craftsmen here as I have done in the past if its still salvageable/able to have a bevel put on it.

You are on the correct course of action.
Toss the scales in the garbage. It is hard to do but it is your only course of action.
A Restorer in the Classified section, once chosen, will let you know if the blade can be saved.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.
