Default Questions for a Dorp & Voos 6/8 vintage SR

    Hey Fellas...

I just purchased a vintage Straight Razor... a Dorp & Voos 6/8 made in Solingen, Germany. After reading a few older posts on the SRP, I found out that this razor was probably the forerunner to the modern Dovo razor... right? My question is... how do you determine how old this razor is? I believe it's a 1930's - 1940's razor... but I don't know... being that this is my very first straight razor I have bought. (Newbie)

The razor looks to be in very good shape... I just liked the looks of the razor and bought it. I hope this was a smart purchase...

I hope you SRP veterans here can help me out with some information... Thanks a lot! Jim

Yeah Dorp & Voos were bought out by Fritz Bracht and the name Dovo was a conjugation of Dorp & Voos. I've had some Dorp/Voos and like Dovo, they were fine razors. I think they used both stampings even up into the post war years, but not 100% sure.

So... I'm a thinking that this was a good buy then... for being my first SR purchase. It has been professionally sharpened and honed... just waiting for the razor to be shipped back to me... can't wait to receive it and try it out! These photos were sent to me by the reputable razor restorer, who has been working on the razor... he said that this Dorp & Voos SR was in excellent shape... almost no wear... and should last a lifetime, with proper care! I asked him if he knew how old this razor was... he did not. He said that there are many razor collectors out there who might know... Thanks Jimmy for the information!

Thanks bouschie... really learning a lot from the SRP forum... now if I can only learn to shave with my newly acquired vintage Dorp & Voos straight razor, without cutting my ears off... I'm all good... Lol!

Just take it slow. You will cut yourself no matter how long you use a straight. Baby steps will get you there. Be patient and don't give up.

Yep... I plan to take it slow. I've been shaving with a DE razor for quite awhile and know that it takes time to shave correctly. When I first started to wet shave, it took me 45 minutes or more to shave with the DE razor... now I can shave in about 10 minutes... if I'm in a hurry.

I've been watching Lynn's videos and others on YouTube on the art of SR shaving... I can see where someone can get themselves into trouble by not paying attention to details... so... slow is the way I'm going to attack this learning curve... and I hope that the new "vintage" razor I bought is a good investment and will help me into learning the straight razor ways... or I'm only out $75.00 bucks...

You have purchased a very nice straight razor and you have been given a good perspective on it's age. From this point on we would very much appreciate no further discussions of your "investment" or the price you paid.

Thank you and welcome to SRP.
