Thread: Red Dots on Scales

Recently I bought a Razor, 7/8 Manhattan Cutlery, Sheffield.
I think the scales are horn or bone very clear see through. Anyway, on the scale are a pattern of small red dots 7. Also, a scratched #118 in scale.
Does these dots represent anything, or just the original owner getting artistic.

Sometimes dots have been used to designate a pair of razors so that you can tell which one you shaved with last. I suppose a seven day set could have been marked this way but a photo would be better to judge.

Seems an old collector (Doyle?) had a system of dots to catalog his razors?

Silverloaf just had a bunch on Instagram he posted with Dots like this. Maybe I'll PM him and see if he wants to add anything.

The razor was likely once in the collection of Judge Henry Lummus. He was a gentleman who had quite an extensive collection of straight razors back in the 1930s or so. He authored a few articles on straight razors for antique collecting magazines. He had a system (no one knows how it worked) of colored dots that he would make on the back side of the razor scales and/or numbers scratched into the scales.

I think that was the name mentioned on Instagram too, about Silverloafs razors.

The bulk of Lummus' collection was acquired by the Shelburne Museum in 1958.
They have a 'razor' room with tons of old razors. The place is just crazy!
I SO want to go and spend a few days there!

Dude. They have a collection of EVERYTHING! Snowmobiles even! I think it may take a week to see it all!
