Help with a filarmonica
Hello everyone,
I got this fili and I can't get any info on it
It says filarmonica 14 but is about 5/8 does that mean it is a reground?
There is no made in Spain etching on the tang
Thank you very much for any info

Thanked: 580The Filli 14 are usually close to 8/8 so my guess is yes it has been re-ground. Looks like a well done repair to me though. More pictures would help.

Thanked: 4827You will likely have to do some hone gymnastics to get that one honed up. It appears that the tang is wider than the spine, likely due to the regrind. If you are uncertain if your stroke is covering the entire edge you should put a little marker on it and do a few strokes. It is a good indicator. If you have not honed many razors it may be a good learning experience, but remember that if it is not working to put it away and come back to it. There is no value in grinding away for hours when things are not working.

That's a first generation pre 1950s with the incorrect second generation scales it's seen quite a few hones through the years definitely started it's life as a 8/8, the reverse side of the tang as no country of manufacture this is a give away to the date. Pre-1950 versions will NOT have "FABRICACION ESPAÑOLA / MADE IN SPAIN" stamped on the rear of the tang, also the vertical 14 with the curved lettering is another give away that model is the especial, it once looked like this one here's mine with a solid metal Lyre inlay with celluloid scales.

OK to update I tried setting the bevel with a 1k, but couldn't get the middle part sharp even though the marker test with rolling x stroke showed the ink being taking off all along the edge
I think I just gave up to early will try again today

Thanked: 4827Any razor that has seen that much work is not merely honing, it is restoration work. You are building and shaping a bevel where none existed. It may take a lot of time or it may go relatively simple. When you start with a new or previously honed razor you are typically rebuilding a bevel, some of the material has already been removed. Glad to hear you put it aside. Stuff like that I rarely do all in one sitting.

thank you guys very much for the info.
for an update i returned to the stone today and did countless rolling x stroke ,checked a couple of times with the marker and it shows that the stone is hitting the whole edge , the heel and the toe are cutting arm hair easily but the middle part is still completely dull !!
i am baffled , i am not using tape,
any suggestions ? should i just continue with rolling x or maybe change tactics .
any help would be awesome
