Thanked: 10The red surface is supposed to be a strop.
The dark surface is supposed to be a stone.
The lever works the stone on each of those surfaces in turn.

Yeah, quite a few of us have a Rolls stashed away somewhere. I dig mine out every once in a while just for a change. They can work quite well.
For anyone thinking of buying one, make sure that the hone isn't cracked and that the strop is in decent shape. Plenty of them end up with cracked or broken hones. Also, as with many things related to wet shaving, do your homework on price, etc., before buying. Rolls tend to be way, way overpriced by many vendors.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 10Hi
I know, I bought one missing the handle and the hone stone was very coarse and there was a lot of the same grit in the strop.
This one has a smooth strop and the hone stone seems to be a fine grit too.
I believe the central handle storage position is wrong.
I think the handle should be unscrewed and stored beside the hone/ strop handle. In this place the handle cannot damage the blade.
I haven't used one yet but soon. GrinDennis

I use mine once in a while. Other than making sure the honing stone and leather strop are in good condition also make sure they are on the correct side/lid. The sharp edge of the blade should be running forward on the stone while running on the backside of the strop (hope that makes sense). I have seen some where the strop and stone were set on the wrong sides or lids... The honing stones can be difficult to find in great condition but yours looks pretty good. The leather strop can easily be replaced if need be. I just cut out the right size out of an old strop I had laying around. My razor didn't come with actual leather but rather some sort of balsa strop perhaps. Whatever it was it wasn't working well but now that it has actual leather it made all the difference, nice sharp edge... All around, I really enjoy this razor...
