It's unfortunate that some time has elapsed, but this kind of quality control is shameful. Here's contact info for Thiers although you might need someone who knows French to assist:

I hate to be the one to tell you this but I do not think that is a defect. I have the very same razor and it has the same markings and has always had them. I have mine about 3 years now. It shaves fine and the markings have not changed from day one.

remember that these razors are supposedly not like the maestro damascus but are closer to the true wootz razors and the process is unique to any other razors we have seen here. It will be interesting to see what TI says about it. The fissures you see in the steel are similar to what you see in the Tosuke razors.

I have Tosuke razors, and love them, the flaw on this TI is not like the ones you see in the Japanese steal blades. The Tosuke razors have small pockets of impurities trapped between the layers of steal. The steal is welded into a solid and strong blade. The V shaped seam no the TI goes completely through the blade, and so dos the crack. As far as I can tell (without x-rays) the seam cuts across the rest of the laminations at a 90-degree angle. Think of taking a stack of papers and cutting them with a knife. It looks like there was a gap in that part of the blade and the seams were not well done when the smithy drew the steal into that area to fill the gap. Yes I have done some work with an anvil and steal. And to weld two sections of steal together you need to have the proper welding temperature and you need to pound them into each other, usually with one on top of the other on the anvil. I was told when I received the razor that the seam was not a problem and the blade was solid. If they send me a replacement with a seam like this on it I will send it back. I would hate to think they were taking less than perfect blades and trying to patch them and sell them as first rate blades but if you have one with the same seam and they send me a replacement with that problem there may be a TI Damascus for sale soon, cheap.

Given that they are as expensive as a Livi, you should not settle for anything less than a perfect razor.

I took another look at mine, the lines or furrows are more like the tosuke's they do not appear to go through the blade.

    Exclamation NEW RAZOR!

Today I spoke with Beverly from Classic shaving. (MY apologies if I misspelled your name.) And TI is forging me a NEW RAZOR! It will take about 6 months to arrive. Apparently these Damascus blades are not made every day. Either that or there is a line to receive one.

    Rucker,

Glad it is I am to hear that Thiers Issard <picture of pachyderm> will stand behind their product!!! or iii as the case may be. It signifies that they recognized the fault was their own and in good form will make it right. Hopefully you won't begrudge them the time it takes to make your new razor as product/production runs are a legitimate fact of manufacturing life.

I think there were also a few small chips in the edge (on the high mag. image) just above the canvas under the blade.... Not only would that most likely hone out, it does not matter now. New Razor coming.

    Game on!
