Thanked: 3Can someone tell me about this kamisori I have?
Hi
I have not been able to resist the Call of the Kamisori. I have purchased this used one seen here.
Can anyone tell me something about it? I have at least the following questions I am wondering about:
Q Do the letters mean something to anyone? Is there a name or place of manufacture?
Q Is this vintage? If yes, is this like 20 years old or 80?
Q What is this yellow/waxy looking handle substance? I have seen numerous of the same type in photos but am not sure of the material. Should I be removing this to check for pitting/damage under the handle and then what....
Q Is this Japanese steel or Swedish or?????
Q How much hone wear is this? It looks minimal to moderate, but I really am unfamiliar with these.
Q The toe/corner looks rounded out a little. Is this the case or is the toe looking correct?
Any info would be much appreciated. It should be here soon and I am really looking forward to checking it out and seeing if I can get in shave ready. I am a sucker for informative details though and need to understand more about this razor.
Thnx for anything at all!

Looks alright mate
The back is the true indicator of wear etc and a pic of it will tell you a lot more,
There is also a Kanji thread on here somewhere that would be the best place to ask about the kanji and get a correct answer on the stamps. This will help answer the age and origin questions
the wrap is a lacquered thread.Last edited by Substance; 03-25-2016 at 11:20 PM.

Thanked: 3I have no idea what the back looks like. Ooops. Hopefully it will work out. Great point, thnx.
It seems I need to beef up my knowledge regarding these in general.
Kanji - yes I will definitely look into specific threads on this topic. It would seem as well that I could go elsewhere, perhaps a forum about kanji language where the members are active, are translation friendly, and bored! Maybe. : )
Lacquered string - that certainly fits what can be seen. Thnx
Any sense of age?

Thanked: 3Thanks. You have been really helpful. I am learning more and looking forward to having this shaver in hand. Once I read over the kanji thread you are referenced I realized this is a language that millions probably know. There is a Japanese noodle house down the road and they handwrite their menus in kanji so I will head down there and see if anybody might help out.
I'm looking forward to seeing the back of this razor - I didn't realize the more honed side is the other side. I may get lucky!
thnx
