Thanked: 1Dobby 95 Strand razor
Hello,
I am new at this so bare with me please
beside my first shave I also acquired an old razor J. Dobby 95 strand.
I believe the maker was in activity from mid 1800 to early 1900.
and I would be taker on any information about the razor
date,
scale material, are they original
... ...
I have seen one example in this forum of the same maker.
The razor does need cleanup, but I'd like to make sure of what I am dealing with especially the scale.
i can see on them some irregular parallel band but I do not see the chevron typical of ivory. Note that the parallel band are not obvious at all angle.
any help appreciated

Thanked: 3224At a guess you are dealing with ivory scales judging by the thinness of the scales and what looks like washerless pins.

Scales look like ivory to me.
John Dobby, of 95 Strand, London. You're right in the period that he operated (Google books turns up a few directories and listings of him from 1850s onward), but I'm not sure how to date the razor more precisely. On my gut feeling I'd say 1860-1880 but that's a guess.

Good stuff. Did you confirm what the scales are actually made of? Ivory?

Thanked: 3224The razor turned out very nicely.
If you want to confirm for yourself that those are ivory scales, do a forum search for "hot pin test".
Also the schreger lines that appear in ivory can appear as stacked chevrons or as irregular parallel lines depending on how the ivory was sawn/cut similar to wood grains.
I'd still bet my bottom dollar that those are ivory scales.
