Help with Razor date.
Does anyone have any info on a brand of Sheffield razors named George Hiles. I won one off the bay last year and it turned out to be a fairly good shaver. I plain on giving it to a friend and would like to tell them a little about it but don't know anything except that it's a Sheffield with Ivory scales. I hate to say it but i do have limited computer skills. any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanked: 4826Looks like nice ivory scales. I had a look around and my toddler research skills have found nothing.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

I know i have found nothing. i do know it shaves good. when i honed it it took 3 layers of tape to get the edge i was looking for but as for hone wear there was very little. I really don't understand that.

It might have worn off, but I don't see England on it. That means it was made before 1891, so it is a start! I can't find anything else, he probably was a re-seller of some type and had the razors made by one of the many makers around at that time.

It has a standard monkey tail, a distinct tang, and a very slight curve to the scales, so it is probably (taking a guess) 1830-1850 or so. If Zak or Science Guy see it they can probably tell you who the guy's grandparents were, how many wives and kids he had, and where he is buried ......
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 4249Could it be that instead of Hiles, its actually Hides, would make sense as the family has a very long history in sheffield.
Very nice looking razor by the way.
