Default No Checked Luggage: Which Disposable Razor Would You Pack in Your Carry-On?

I'm presenting at a conference at the end of the month, but I don't need to check any luggage since it's domestic and only four days long (and there's a $50 roundtrip fee to check a single suitcase).

Alas, bringing a straight razor or any safety razor blades in my carry-on will probably end up with my tools in the trashcan and my name on the TSA watch list. And I don't want to waste my money on safety razor blades once I land—having to throw away all the blades I don't use.

Upsettingly, my only option is a disposable razor (these are okay in carry-on baggage). So now the question is: which one? I don't care much about how close of a shave I get. Comfort is what matters. When I used cartridges before, I constantly suffered from ingrown hairs and razor bumps. I'll be happy with anything that is unlikely to cause those.

I have taken a D.E with me and bought some blades once there. You can get 1 pack for a couple of bucks.

You know where your staying just mail a small pack of blades to the hotel. I've done his for years ever since the TSA got into the game, Tc

I've done the same thing with DE blades. I've also flown a handful of times with a DE blade in the razor and only got the blade confiscated once (in Boston). Ever since then I mail a blade or two to the hotel - no problem. Stamp is cheaper than buying something there - and they are often hard to find.

Thank you, gentlemen, for your resourceful replies. The mailing idea is fantastic! I'll be sure to use it when I have a chance.

Unfortunately, shipping won't work. I'm staying in an apartment that the university hosting the conference has reserved for visitors. Since I don't know which apartment I'll be assigned, I have no clue where I should ship the blades.

Buying on site won't work, either. According to Google Maps, the nearest drugstore or grocery is 2.5 miles from the campus (it's a rural campus). So, the only realistic option would be to call a cab. As much as I love the sport, I'm not going to book a cab to buy a pack of blades.

It looks like a disposable or cartridge is my only option. What would you bring along if you were in my shoes?

Most Universities have their own mailroom. The one at which I work has their own zip code! As a last effort you may want to just call the University mailroom, ask them if they'll hold a letter for you that you will pick up at the conference - they probably have a box just for that. We do.

Otherwise - I haven't shaved with a disposable in so long, I wouldn't even know where to start in terms of advice.

Put a blade in your carry on. Put it in the bag standing up vertically. The X ray won't pick it up. last time I flew I had a pair of scissors in the bag I didn't know about. Went right through, I didn't find them until I unpacked. But they did take a new tube of Prorasso that hurt. TSA is doing a fine job.

Has anyone tried mailing blades with a Feather razor? I'm considering buying a Feather Artist Club SS folding razor. After all, if I can shave with a straight, then why settle for a safety?

@aalbina: Thank you for your suggestion. There is hope! Despite working at universities for most of my adult life, I had no clue that their mailrooms will actually hold stuff for you. I do not exaggerate when I say that the information you've shared is life-changing. I'm telling my colleagues. TSA regulations prevent us from bringing along our regular comforts when attending domestic conferences. Now we won't have any reason to complain.

@Hacker7: I definitely believe you when you say the TSA is doing a lousy job (in fact, the TSA stole some wrapped gifts from my parents when they flew out of Long Beach, CA two or three years ago, leaving the torn wrapping and empty boxes in their suitcase). I'm sure your suggestion will probably work, but I don't want to risk being added to a watch list and getting an extra pat-down every time I fly. I had a friend who brought back some banned food from a foreign country. She gets stopped at customs every time now.
