    Default Loosening scales?

HI is there a way to loosen up a pivot scale? Tightened one up a little too much just gave it a small tap and now I gotta watch how it closes or the blade hits the scales. When I got it the blade was loose in the scales.

I have a few that have to be guided closed. With time, it will probably loosen some. What material are the scales?

Celluloid. The scales look like they were a little off when I got it. Didn't want to cracking them trying to loosen the pin though.

    How about a pic?

Was the blade hitting before? If not, you may have bent the pin.

But, your scales may have shrunk, it which case, you should re-scale anyway, as that is an indication of possible cell rot.

You can file the wedge, If, you just need a few thousands or the wedge may have shifted position. Check to ensure the wedge is in the proper positon and not sticking out of the scales. You might just need to reposition and tighten the wedge pin.

Use a small flat file with teeth on the edge, a strip of tape on the file flats or on the insides of the scales, will protect the scales, for the few strokes it will take to remove a bit of the wedge.

    Photos would help.

No they weren't hitting before the blade was just loose but the scales weren't lined up when looking at them from the side. That wasn't a big deal for me though just wanted to tighten it up a little. Really like this razor too. Will have to check it when I get home

Yea, you wedge may be a bit lose and have moved, some are not cut 90 degrees to the top of the scales and if it moves a bit will hit.

I suspect you bent the pin and will need to redo the pin altogether.

I have used steam to loosen scales before. I steamed them and then ran immediately under cold water. Be careful with celluloid and heat though.

What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one
