    Default John Cockhill razor

Just picked up a 6/8+ smiling blade Sheffield vintage razor. I tried to look it up and other then it being over 100 years old there is very little about the quality of the razor or products produced by the company. Couldn't resist a old vintage razor that smiles at me. Anyone have one or used one?

John Creswick Cockhill, born in Sheffield February 15, 1826 & by 1861 was a razor manufacturer on Eldon Street but started in 1855. His corporate mark in 1862 was a beehive but in later years it was a dragon. He made razors for the Army & Navy, various Sheffield firms & traded with some leading houses in Birmingham. Cockhill retired in 1899 & died February 8, 1903 at the age of 76.

I like the scales but once I get the razor I want to research what scales looked like back when this was made and try to duplicate them.

The most common materials that would have gone with that blade would be black horn scales with a lead wedge. Both materials are reasonably easy to work with.
