    Default Help with the identification

Hey all,.. got this one as a gift a few days back.. I cleaned it today, and the sign on a tang apperaed (thought there isn't going to be any) but it's pretty worn, all I can make out of it is:

    1st row: James B..?
2nd: No 222 Allend (maybe shire)
    3rd: Sheffield

Can anyone help with the identification. Tried to find it in the manufacturers list but didn't have any luck.

It could be James Barlow & Sons, he was in Allen Street. If there was an "Echo" below the word "Sheffield" that would clinch it. As it is, someone more knowledgeable may have other suggestions.

sounds like a right name, when I take into consideration what I read, thanks! , I guess they lived/worked on allen stree No 222 ..

When I look at the blade geometry it doesn't look like an Echo really,... the blade is worn but looks odler grind when compared to Echos..?

It may be a James Barlow. It seems I have a very old Barlow that does not have the ECHO mark on it. It's ashamed it is so worn & pitted. It looks like I can see a "B" just after the James.

I've dug up a bit more on James Barlow from notes I made last year after some research on Ancestry:

At the time of the 1861 England census, James Barlow (70) his wife Susannah (71) and their two sons John (46) and James jnr (37) were living at 234 Brook Hill, Sheffield. Their occupations were given as “scissor and razor makers”. The family had two servants so they were clearly the proprietors of a business rather than employees. James Barlow snr, “razor manufacturer”, died on 15 Jun 1869 and left an estate valued at “under 300 pounds”. By 1881 John Barlow was living at 299 Western Bank, Sheffield. This was a well-to-do area and he had two servants listed. The census also states that he employed 39 men, 4 boys, 4 women and 7 girls. He is described as a manufacturer. .. And then some I'd have thought.
