Dovo vs. Filarmonica? Which one to get?
I'm looking at buying a third razor. I have considered a choice between one of these two.
http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...940/190304.htm
A Dovo Classic "Secial" 6/8 Black.
OR

A Filarmonica Doble Temple 7/8 Black.
I'm wondering how these compare to one another in quality and shaving ability. Which one is easier to maintain for a newbie. Which one will hone easily without special techniques employed.
If anyone has an opinion as to which is the better choice, I'd be very interested in what you have to say. Or perhaps, someone will suggest a better alternative to both within the price range.
This straightrazor stuff is getting to be an obsession! I can't even drice past a garage sale without wondering if there is a good str8 or a strop buried in the junk pile. LOL Am I suffering from "RAD"?

Thanked: 324If you're excellent with the hone and don't have an extremely stiff beard, like a square point and bigger blades, I'd lean toward the Filly. If you like them a wee bit smaller, round point, a little stiffer and easier to hone (due to stiffness), then the Dovo might be a better choice. It's a hard choice because they're both very nice razors. I think Filly's are the best of the paper-thin blade razors. In fact, they may be the thinnest of them all.

My Filly #12 outperformed my DOVO but not by a lot. Flip a coin or get both

Thanked: 5i don't know if this is the same blade as the one you were looking at but i have heard ppl have been very very impressed with those Dovo tortoise specials:
http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...940/190287.htm
it's only slightly more expensive, and it's pretty handsome
price wise... the filly is up there in price. if i were to get a filly, you could probably wait patiently and get a vintage filly off ebay in good condition for cheaper.
in that price range you could also look at several TI's
i'd lean towards the Dovo as a balance of performance and price. and the money you save can be used to fuel your RAD

Thanks Eric
You're right... that is a very nice razor. I don't know why I missed it.
I'm having a "RAD" attack! I think I'll go try honing my 3/8 Filly one more time to see if I can get it keen and if not, it may take my mind off my curent affliction.
Shave on!

How about just not deciding and buy the Lynn-honed Goldenedge Pearlduck I'm selling?
LOL.

I really wish it was just a bit larger, it shaves really nicely.

Thanked: 5your problems may come by trying to hone a 3/8. i've found honing that a larger blade is a little easier as the blade seems more stabile and easier to keep flat on the hone. my favorite size would probably be 6/8. sits nice on the hone and isn't so bulky it feels like a lawnmower on my face. i do prefer a smaller blade for areas like my chin and upper lip
