Thread: Do you think these are the original scales?

Recently aquired this Frederick Reynolds for a song. Do you think these are the original scales? They are celluloid and the razor does NOT have England stamped under Shefield. Are the scales right for the time period? I plan to hone, strop and shave with this razor- no restoration needed IMO. Just curious about the scales.

Just took another look. When I used to hang out in barber shops in North NJ 30 years ago, picking those old guys brains, I was told that barber supplies had a route with a delivery truck that went around to the shops with all the gear they might need. No internet, and probably very little telephone ordering.

So anyway ....... the supply salesman carried replacement scales on the truck and would install them for the customers. Note the pin is only at the top. None at the wedge end. Although some factory razors may have had that type of scale, many, many of the replacement scales were made like that. In any case, from that time period the Reynolds would have had horn scales probably.

The 1 pin also peaked my interest. I don't know enough about razor construction from that period to even take a guess. A friend found this one at a swap meet in California and bought it because it was so cheap.

Damn hard to tell,, the scuff marks may or may not be from a recent Re-scale...

But I also agree with Jimmy's assessment, those Candy Celluloid scales are simply not common on the Sheffield's of that time frame.
Horn and the Slick Black Bakelite's were what we saw most often

I am not really sure what to do with this razor, I have had very limited success honing razors from that time period. It might just hit the back burner for a while.

No pro...but highly doubt it.

Not a chance .......... IMHO ...........

Pins are not copper or brass, that is what made me wonder.
