    I don't know Steve. I tend to agree with you about Herkenrath blanks for most manufacturers. The part that has me scratching my head is I recall a dovo video somewhere about their manufacture process showing blanks being stamped out of sheet stock the power hammered into shape using a die. Then ground, heat treated ( lead quenched) etc and finished. But I am with you that the temper is probably the biggest factor.

    That 'How It's Made' video showing the Dovo factory is many years old, they may well no longer forge their blanks.
