I notice now after lookin through that some more that they actually mention Tim Zowda in the Damascus steel section there.
Also, many of the steels listed come with links where they can be purchased.
See that Thunderforged Damascus is capable on 64-65 Rc !!
Micro chipping he we come !!
Look at the performance of spring steels like 5160 (near the bottom)
Makes me want to go make a razor out of some car leaf springs or coils off of some struts !!!

I like how the junior members keep trying to correct the senior members

well that's snobbery or I've never heard it. I'm a middle aged company director. How much junior to you is that? Do you think that all we've ever done is rattle round this forum?

sorry about that. I didn't mean I was senior to you in any way, shape, or form. I was just making an observation that I've seen in this particular thread. Half the people say there is silver and the other half say there isn't. It seems most of the senior members agree that there isn't any silver. I think it is pretty much irrelevant! From what I've read in this thread and other sources, it looks like silver steal is a high quality (and pretty and shiny) high carbon steel that takes on a really sharp edge. That is about all I think I needed to know about it. All the other info is icing on the cake.

No worries. As far as I am aware (and I was wrong about the molybdenum!), silver steel was invented 1820-ish by Michael Faraday whilst workin on improving steel used in surgical instruments. AT THAT TIME silver was added - it no longer is. Stubs, Europe's largest producer of silver steel, give this as their composition (figures are min/max values) -
Carbon
1.10%
1.20%
Silicon
0.10%
0.25%
Chromium
0.40%
0.50%
Sulphur
0.035%
Manganese

Uniform machining properties and consistent response to heat treatment.
(All genuine STUBS Silver Steel is to BS 1407 Analysis optional standard, with the addition of 0.4% to 0.5% chrome for uniformity of both machining and consistency of micro structure of hardening/tempering).
And that's all I'm going to say!Last edited by blueprinciple; 07-02-2007 at 11:32 PM.
