Default Wondering about the quality of a Sana Cutlery razor

    Hi,
I am looking to buy my first straight razor and Damascus steel has really interested me I found a razor on etsy from Sana Cutlery and I was wondering if anyone has bought a razor from them. The link is below:
    https://www.etsy.com/listing/4969000...home_active_14

The color is also very interesting and I was wondering if that would affect the shave quality.
    Thank you.

VikramAmin, save your money for a real razor instead of those you have been looking at.
Those "razors" in the advertisement are a waste of your money and will not shave or even take anything close to a shave ready steel blade.

For your first straight razor I would look at the regular razors available in our BST offerings.
If they say they are shave ready they will be shave ready. This approach will save you money and allow you to find out if you might enjoy shaving with a straight razor.

A well made custom damascus razor will cost you $500 ++.

Looks like yet another knife maker producing a razor-shaped object. It looks like it would be hard to hold for both stropping and shaving, the filework on the spine could very well damage and/or ruin your strop, and the blade is very thin for its width - which indicates a very narrow bevel angle and the problems that entails (weak, crumbling edge, microchipping, etc.).

Note: Please note that this Razor comes with factory standard edge but might require some honing to make it shave ready for first usage.
    Undoubtedly it will...

I would absolutely not recommend buying this "razor" if you actually intend to use it for shaving.

High-quality Damascus steel razors are normally quite expensive, several times higher than the price quoted on the Etsy web site. If you are buying them as a fancy display piece, then they may be suitable. If you are buying them for shaving purposes, I suspect you will be disappointed. These appear to be full wedge razors, something that is not recommended for a beginner. Furthermore, the razors are not honed to make them suitable for shaving. Unless you can find someone who has honed one of these razors, purchasing it would be a risk.

For your first razor, you would be much better of purchasing a moderately priced, well know brand razor from a reputable vendor who is able to hone the razor to shave ready condition before shipping it to you. This could either be a new modern production razor, or a vintage razor that has been restored. There are a number of such vendors all around the country. Since you are in NY, a couple not too far away are Griffith Shaving Goods is in RI and Imperial Shaving/Straight Razor Designs is in OH. I know they can provide good razors as I have purchased from them. However, there are also many other reputable vendors. There are some vendors, however, who claim to supply shave ready edges, but who do not have the expertise to do so. Read some of the razor posts and you will learn those who can be trusted and those who are best avoided.

Welcome to the forum. I think the previous posters have said it all. Please do more research before you purchase a straight razor to shave with. Reading the Library section of this site is a good primer. Best of luck.

Owned by "Mr Bill," the Play-Doh character that continually got smushed during the first seasons of SNL in the '70s. Yeah, I'd surely trust him to make a Damascus razor for $500 less than average retail.
