Default DOVO 5/8 half or full hollow?

I have a DOVO 5/8 and 6/8 straight and was considering buying a DOVO 5/8 Half Hollow since it is presumably better for harsher whiskers. Before I committed to buy I thought... WAIT a minute. Maybe I already have a half-hollow DOVO razor. I have the boxes (plastic), and is there any way to tell from the markings on the box if it is FULL or HALF hollow grind?

As long as it has been honed correctly the only difference between grinds is a audible difference they will all give you a great shave.

It is not the grind of the razor that shaves the beard. It is only the apex of the edge. Thus, most experienced shavers will tell you that anything from a extra hollow grind to a full wedge can give a great shave if properly honed and stropped.

I have a very tough beard and my personal preference is a full hollow or even extra hollow grind. I also have a couple of bellied grinds that work for me. I have greater difficulty with half hollow and quarter hollow blades. I just cannot seem to get them keen enough. However, others might disagree with my assessment.

I wonder about your selection of a 5/8" blade as I find that I get my best shaves with a 7/8" blade. I think the extra weight of the larger blade helps plow through my beard. I have a few 5/8" blades; they are great for trimming around the nose and mouth, but I do not like them for shaving my cheeks and neck.

I agree that a wider blade ~6/8-8/8 is better for a thicker beard. In my experience a less-hollow grind has a bit more edge longevity on thicker beards as well. that could just be a reflection of how I handle the different types of blades (i tend to take longer strokes with a more hollow grind), but this has been my experience.

OK.. need to reply as I found out. The box has Best.Nr: 100 581 which denotes a full hollow grind The half hollow grind is the model 101 581
As I understand, the half-hollow is better for more coarse beards. What happens with the blades of the full hollows? Too much flexing during the shave? Could this be why I experience a bit of crow-hopping and jerkiness during shaving with the Full Hollow razors?

Could be using a lower angle with the more flexible full hollow blades would help reduce the crow-hopping. YMMV, but it worked for me.

I own and shave with full hollows bellied hollows half hollows and quarter hollows as I said as long as they are honed correctly they will all deliver a equally good shave, no matter how tough your beard is it's no match for a well honed edge believe me.

A low angle and no pressure. Just shave the lather.

And as said, a well honed razor will cleanly remove any type beard

Jamie hit the nail on the head if the razor, be it full - wedge, if its honed right and stropped right it cuts whiskers no matter the beard. its mostly preference. now if those 2 conditions are met, then its the guy looking at you from the mirror not doing his job Tc
