BobH's link to Wikipedia above gave the Weiss Catalogue of Surgical Instruments in the References, and on page 134 is Item 22 a hernia Bistoury looking the very article! Having looked (actually beyond page 134) at this catalogue I shall be ever grateful to modern medicine and the march of progress since 1863...

Bear in mind, operations performed with that tool were done without anesthesia by a doctor wearing his unwashed finery that was stiff with dried blood because patients of the time found that comforting. It meant he'd performed many surgeries. Originally Posted by Leatherstockiings
