    BobH's link to Wikipedia above gave the Weiss Catalogue of Surgical Instruments in the References, and on page 134 is Item 22 a hernia Bistoury looking the very article! Having looked (actually beyond page 134) at this catalogue I shall be ever grateful to modern medicine and the march of progress since 1863...

    Yeah, I read a short bit about using a bistoury to open the bladder up to remove stones. It gave me phantom pains down below imagining it.

    Bear in mind, operations performed with that tool were done without anesthesia by a doctor wearing his unwashed finery that was stiff with dried blood because patients of the time found that comforting. It meant he'd performed many surgeries.
