Rollin' with Robeson ShurEdge
Like so many of us surely do, I was over at "the bay" looking at vintage razors. I'm mostly a new production / NOS sort of hobbiest, but I've indulged in "old times" before.
So I ran across this razor, a Robeson ShurEdge. Never heard of it. It looked great. What looked like buffed polish, no rust or pantina. Seller described scales in excellent condition. Before I jumped, I wanted to know more about the brand. I came over here to SRP, did an advanced search, and found loads of information. But it was this thread that put me over the top.

When I saw that Glen (gssixgun) described Robesons (albeit secondhandedly) as one of the finest examples of American made razors of last century, that was enough.
So I entered the fray and won the contest with minimal loss of only $29.50 + shipping. Now the pictures.
The sellers description advertised shave ready, honed on Shapton Glass out to 30k. The first one pass shave, with 24 hours growth, without stropping, sleeping dog, no bark. Second shave, 36 hours growth, full on stropping, cat's meow, much purring.A little advice: Don't impede an 80,000 lbs. 18 wheeler tanker carrying hazardous chemicals.

Great catch. Was eyeing it myself. Think you will be very happy. I have several and love them, I would compare them favorably to any English or German make. Robeson, Torrey, Shumate, and Genco I am always on the lookout for.

Thanked: 3226Yea, I have found vintage American made razors as good as any vintage razors made elsewhere. Being Canadian I do not have a horse in the race either. I enjoy my vintage Russian, Swedish, German, Spanish, English, English, French and American made razors equally. Always though vintage American razors were overlooked and under valued but that may be changing.

I'm going to start picking up more vintage, but since I don't restore, they're going to have to be in pretty good condition. Like others, I'm sure, I'd like to sample the world's offerings. Now with this I also have Taylor Eyewitness Sheffield and Hoffritz Barber's King. Glen is currently re-scaling the Taylors. He'll probably post something later.

Thanked: 3226That is the part of this hobby, finding and putting vintage razors back into service, that I really have come to enjoy. Light restoration doesn't require a lot of gear just time and patience. The honing part is something I had to do in the beginning but have come to enjoy doing also. Have fun expanding your vintage razor part of your rotation.

I have 5 of the Taylors Eyewitness blades. Slowly trying to get a 7 day set of them. Used to be fairly easy to find, but suddenly dried up. Now 90% of what I see is trash and way over priced. Glen currently is looking at a Cattaraugus that I managed to screw up the MOP covered tang on. I only have 4 "new" razors. All the rest of mine are vintage and I really prefer them. The history, and frankly the quality of the size and grinds I prefer.
EDIT: The Taylors are a bit different to me. I see others list them as a'medium/good quality" Sheffield. The ergonomics of these just fit my face perfectly. Of all my English razors, I prefer them. Not to knock any of the others, it's just that I get a MUCH better experience with these blades. All are 11/16 - 6/8 hollow ground (2 are "the 1000"). Totally subjective I know, but I always finish a shave with them with a big smile on my face.Last edited by Jlander; 08-21-2017 at 02:49 PM.
