Thread: Removing rust

Re. honing: If there's no rust around the edge, you can protect it by folding, say electric tape over it - carefully! Don't do it tight around the edge, but leave some slack.
If you don't protect the edge and want to polish the razors, be VERY careful. This is never a good idea. In fact, I kill the edges intentionally before starting any work on the blade faces. Too many cuts, you know...

Thanked: 2
These are the rust marks from my three razors.
Also, a quick question. I had my razors honed by Lynn, then used them for 5-6 shaves max each and stored them away. Do I need to do anything more than stropping before I used them again? Also, what kind of paste would you recommend for the occasional freshening up of the edge and how often should I do it?Last edited by dpapam; 08-23-2017 at 01:14 PM.

Ouch. Watch that bone with WD40 and any sort of mineral oil. I'd protect the scales really well, when they're made of natural materials.
I am trying to think what kind of polish may be available in Greece.... hmmmm.... may get back to you on that!

Thanked: 2The problem with honing the blades is that I have no experience whatsoever and I would be really reluctant to try it with these razors. Plus, now that I am back to shaving, I would not like to wait for a month or so before I use them (sending them to a honemeister and getting them back).

This is a problem, yes... So please try to protect the edge with tape, and this will also protect your fingers

OK, regarding the metal polishers. Check Masoutis supermarket, the Chemicals section... They will carry Brasso and Silvo, but these are not really meant for steel (especially not Silvo). I have not tried Brasso yet. Ask them if they have something for harder metals, like Chrome, or stainless maybe. Good luck with this - and let me know if you find anything good please, I might want to pick it up as well!

Thanked: 2What if I clean them without opening the razor? Is this a bad idea?
Great! Thanks! So, should I not give it a try with WD40 at all?

No need for steel wool and WD-40.
As for paste, Chromium Oxide.
.5 micron. ( Razor grade )
Don't clean in the closed position, open and protect the edge with tape , as described.
They look to need very little to get them up and going again.
Brasso should work OK, but as said, see what else they got.Mike

Thanked: 15Toothpaste or baking soda paste? They don't look too bad to me. I'm afraid there will some discoloration.
