    Default George Savage and Son

    Hiya,

Found this large heavy old chopper at a garage sale. Blade's got some light rust but should clean up ok and looks like it says 'American Razor' on one side with an eagle picture. Edge is fine and no pitting. No idea what the scale material is or the razor's age, although I believe it's pretty old. Not a bad deal for $3, although I had to carry it to the car myself...heh.

Terrific find - it was made somewhere around 1840-60, and it looks in very good condition too!

    Nice find.
Your scales, look to be made of horn. Honey horn, as is called.

Thanks to you guys for the info,

Did I mention this thing's got some weight to it? The other razor's just some old MK something or other type I had laying around but it seems like the more normal size blade I see pretty often.

Quite typical of a ol, Sheffield wedge.

Ah yes. A meat & potatoes Sheffield, circa 1840. You've got a really pleasingly narrow window of identification on that one!

George Savage started his American exports business with a partner in NY in 1840, then went bankrupt by 1843, when his mark (XX) got bought up by someone else. His sons restarted the business not long after, but they didn't have the XX mark anymore.

That puts your razor between 1840 and 1843.

That 'old MK something or other'may be a Martin Kindal. Which would be quite a nice blade.

Great razor for a collection. Your lucky to have found it. Great deal too.
    It's just Sharpening, right?
