I will not say that American made razors are better than the other razors I have that are made in various other countries. I will say that my American made razors shave just as well as the others in my rotation. They are often overlooked though for whatever reason that I do not understand.

What would everyone recommend for a good metal polish that will remove scratches rather than just polishing the surface?

Give the steel wool a chance--Metal Polishes are just that--Polishes. Mothers Mag and Aluminum is my favorite but MASS and many others are popular.

Chromium Oxide would remove fine scratches, and polish at the same time.

I prefer to cut active rust away, with a SE razor blade, then steel wool ( if needed ) then 3M metal restorer/ polish. But I'm typically not worried about the pitting as long as its not affecting the edge.
Most full hollow blades won't take much sanding, before destroying the blade.
So its your choice on how far to go with it.
They don't have to be pristine, to still give a great shave, but this is your choice.

In their time, they produced excellent production razors that can hold their own with any razor of the time. I'd compare them to Sheffields. I am from NY and was surprised to find out that razor companies in NY produced more razors then anywhere else in the world in the 1800's. As for quality, they shave great. I own 4 and one is a 1800's razor I picked up from an estate in Canada that was never used. They take and hold a great edge.

Genco's, Geneva's, and Ontario's were made in NY in the 1800. During that period, they produced more razors then any other company. You will not find a better mass produced razor. They compare to Sheffield's of the same era. They take and hold a great edge and are very smooth shavers. For the money, you won't find a bette day to day razor. I own 5 and use them.

I think that the finger lakes steel is right up there with the other razors. My favorite razors are my Geneva's and my W.R. Case.

People either don't know or forget how important manufacturing was to NY up to the late 1950's. The steel razors made in NY are every bit as good as their counterparts in Europe. I have stated this before, the steel in NY razors are second to none. I have 5 NY razors and they hone easily, hold their edges amazingly well and shave smooth. Close would be Sheffield steel razors.
