Thread: Newb recommendation for Grind.

I have a really tough beard and I see there are many types of grinds. For those with tough beards and experience with many grind types where should I be looking to start my journey? Any recommendations on good value blades I should also be keeping an eye out for?

Welcome. It all comes down to personal preference. I have a heavy beard and like wedges and near wedges. I have one or two hollow grounds and they give a great shave. I also prefer 6/8 or larger. But 5/8 shave fine. Guess I was no help. Just feel you can't go wrong either way.

I would recommend a 1/4-1/2 hollow grind for a beard like that. But as said, that's just my preference. YMMV

The edge on heavy grinds like that hold up better to a heavy/ course beard. JMHO

So there is really nothing scientific to sway a decision one way or another.

Not that I'm aware of, that will be determined by what shaves the most comfortably for you.

I get a comfortable shave with all but the wedge, and near wedge. They seem to stick to my face, compared to the hollow grinds. The only true way of knowing, is to try the different grinds, to see what suits you personally.

If you hone and restore them yourself, as I do, you'll learn what works best for you.

As said, it really doesn't matter. Get what you like, learn to use it, then get another.

This is pretty much my experience too, except that (near) wedge shaves are not strictly speaking uncomfortable, I just don't quite like how they feel in use i.e. sticky feel and lack of feedback.

I most often choose to shave with a 1/2 hollow, the other grinds get used too but not nearly as often, and there are very few of the extra hollow that I like. I can get a comfortable shave with them all but I am not a fan if the blade is too noisy.

Not a uncomfortable shave, more of how they feel.
