Thread: Dead Duck

This razor was indeed "jinxed" and finding it has left me feeling blue.

While this was a sad discovery in a pile in an old storage shed, I thought I would post it for the simple knowledge it provides.
If you ever wondered what some of the older ducks looked like, here you go.
I myself had never seen the early style DublDuck inlay. And while i have seen the occasional Blue Jinx, this is the first time I have seen a 6/8 version.
Under the crud that was some of the best and most realistic celluloid turtle I have ever seen. And I curse its beauty for being so insidiously destructive (as such beauty often is)
Anybody know what JAHRE ALT means?

Man! That is too bad. I also swear against the German and American faux tortoise.
I sent a few to B52 to save. Actually 3!
He can make the scales and save/transfer the inlays.

Some of this stuff should be saved. I suppose just the inlays here.

Did I ever show you the inlays from my cell rotten Stainless "President"? They actually fell apart completely once the scales were out from under. I now have a little collection of "alphabet soup"

I fear this inlay may be just as far gone. (but I will try to save it anyway)

That's a shame Magpie, must have been a stunner when it left the factory. Have had a few with the same problem in job lots. They just didn't know this would happen in time with the celluloid. Sad, because those scales must have looked very nice on that blade.

Jahre Alt is German for Years old. Thats a pretty razor though. Do your best.

So 40 was not a model number, but an actual part of a slogan. Now THATS interesting! Did Bresnick perhaps do these as a 40 year anniversary model? Was it the grinder of the Blue Jinx 40th anniversry in the shop, and the Jinx was to commemorate them? (To Another 40 years, dont Jinx it!)

Unfortunatly, the "best" I can do is to simply put this photo up here. The rot damage is so severe the blade has actually cracked through in 3 spots. I will attempt to salvage the inlay, and install on a custom set of scales for a Duck I have with no shoes for its feet (and not likely to ever find a pair to match it)

My guess is it means 40 year guarantee or service life of the razor. DD made a series of "Lifetime" razors so that would fit right in.

Never seen a Blue Jinx before. Bet those were nice looking new.
I've heard celluloid shell scales spoken of as being a problem. What made them more prone to rotting than regular celluloid?

It just seems the light colored and transparent celluloids break down faster. It may have to do with light affecting the material or the coloration chemicals used.
