Thanked: 0Piece of Junk: What's it called?
Hi...
I purchased a very cheap (used) razor. The idea was to practice honing/sharpening and if possible, use it for shaving.
The blade had a regular spine but, as the metal tapered down toward the edge, it was much thinner than any razor I've ever seen. The last 1/4" was like sheet metal and the very last 1/8" was like foil. If you pressed your fingernail against the side of the edge, you could see the outline of your fingernail on the other side. The blade was quite old and was a 5/8" hollow ground. It was marked as "Jung Co. New York", "N. i Germany".
Other than "junk", what do you call this style of blade?
PS. I'm getting to the point that I can straight shave about as quickly as with a Bic. The Str8 is a lot more fun.

Ray,
I've honed a Jung before--they're good razors, generally speaking.
I'm guessing you have a double hollow ground razor. There's probably a better term, but I've never been really good at identifying the different grinds.
I have a Friodur that's the same way--you can flex the blade by running your nail under it. It's alarming when you first notice it, but the razor should shave well once properly honed.
Good luck,
Josh

That is a normal razor, not a junk one. Running the edge over the fingernail is a standard test that is done in the factory, to check progress of the hollowing of the blade. Generally, the thinner the grind, the more expensive the razor.

I bought a Jung off my barber, so I'd say they're decent razors - if they're in good condition.

fwiw, i just honed up an old jung double hollow razor and it took a very good edge quite quickly. shaved very well. the double hollows are very thin near the edge and make for a talkative shave.
cheers and good luck,

Thanked: 0FYI: I purchased it sight-unseen for $7.00. It has a very large chip at the heel of the blade. -Not sure if it can be fixed...

I agree that you've probably got an extra hollow ground blade, the kind Dovo call 'Premier Klang' (what a great phrase!). The edge is indeed little more than foil - other vintage ones I have seen are upper-end ERN's and Gotta 120's. I think the theory is that with the last 1/4" or so being so flexible it moulds to your facial contours better. All I can say is that I tried one and got good results but not so far ahead of my wedge. Sounds like a good piece, though you will have to take great care honing it as the edge bends so easily and the bevel will go down the pan in a couple of heavy strokes!
