Thanked: 133Preserving straight razor question
I have 3-4 very nice razors that I use very often and want to oil them up so I don't need to worry about them rusting over time. My other straights are in a rotation and I not worried about them rusting over time since I will notice it before it gets bad and can just quickly polish if I ever need too. (really only had to do this 2-3 times and it was just to get rid of some water stains before I touched razor up).
2 of them have horn/bone scales if that changes anything.
Looking for oil suggestions for long time storage and is rubbing the oil on the blade with your hands okay? I feel like grease from my fingers might mix in and cause some rust possibly but not sure.
thanks again

Thanked: 4827I do a couple of different things.
Stuff that is works in progress are all pinned on a bulletin board and hang in my humid basement. They get a very thin coat of Vaseline between being worked on.
Ones in regular rotation are waxed with ren wax occasionally.
Stuff that is basically in storage waiting for me to build display cases is wrapped in VCI paper and in plastic storage containers with desiccant packs.
I have one display case that has waxed razors on display and hidden desiccant packs in the case. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Tuf-Glide. Several members pointed me toward Tuf-Glide and I have never turned back since. The stuff works awesome.

There are many ways to store razors. There is a product called R.I. G. that I use . I just put a light coat on the blade and make sure it gets on the hinge pin. I then wrap in wax paper (the same stuff we use in the kitchen) the put it in the coffin or just a plastic container then to the safe. I have stored razors there for as long as 20 years with no problem.

save your money,
make simple, keep away your blades ( at least the carbon one) from moisture and you ll never get rust.If you can not, the silicate gel is your friend.

I like Ballistol. It's a protectant, rust inhibitor, and a lubricant. I like it because it doesn't get gummy over time and works well on my razors and other items.

For long term storage AG Russell makes a product called no rust. It's a silicon based product. Once applied it lasts forever and gives 100% protection. I've used it for years.

I like all of these ideas but don't do the same as any of them myself!
There are so many options and most if not all of them work well. Go to your local hardware store or sporting goods store and find one of these mentioned. Dry the blade and coat it. Keep it dry while in storage and you will be good to go.
Be reasonable but don't over think it.
