Thread: slim blades

I have this pipe razor, 9mm in width. I have quite a few of these type blades and I cant figure out what there deal is.

Are or were they used primarily for trimming?

How are you supposed to hone them, I would need to half the tape length ways to start with.

This one is German I'm guessing, although the writing on the reverse of the tang does not seem German to me.

I think the general consensus is that blades in the 3/8 size range were for trimming. I have seen German blades in that size marked as "wiener schaber" literal translation "Vienna scraper", I think. IIRC those blades were shoulder less.

Yes, if you wanted to hone one with tape you would have to half the tape. Even with a 4/8 razor in a heavier grind you might have to half the to hone.

Blades 4/8 and smaller are a pita to hone and strop.

I've had a bonafide 2/8 razor for 8 or 9 years. I've still never tried to hone it since it is so minty and I don't see a way to properly tape it.

I have one of those wiener schaber blades too.
No way would I let these near my Kanayama.

I think most of them are in great condition because no one ever uses them.

I have honed a few 3/8 and a 2/8 razor absolute nightmare to hone the 2/8 and especially strop, I have this miniature razor I restored a while back, looks like a perfect scaled-down model and not a corn razor it's a 3/8 I set the bevel and honed that one up to a shave ready edge it's a pretty little thing.

I've always heard those called mustache trimmers.
The trick to stropping them is to use a bench strop.
