Anyone know who made this razor?
As you can see, its pitted on the blade and the etching is just about gone. But you can just see the outline of the etch. It looked like it was intricate and I can just make out two letters that were the end of a word. "EL".
With the tang stamp (Solingen Extra) I was hoping to find something but I'm having no luck. Hoping someone here has seen this stamp or etch before and can give me an idea as to who the maker was. Nothing on the back of the tang. I'd love to have a clue to its age too but there is so little to go on. So if you think you might have a clue for me, please let me know. I know I'm asking for miracles here but I just had to ask the group as I'm just not getting anywhere with this investigation as to who made it.

As you know, Solingen is a german city, center of cutlery. At the golden times, there were 800 factories in the city and suburbs. Some of them made generic blades intended to be badged with the name of the retailer.

Puma had a line that had Extra on them. I know they had "Extra" on the blade face, but I can't remember if it was on the tang or not.

I've spent about 5 hours now looking at pics of razors so I'm about to go razor blind! Still never found anything with the bottom lines of this etch, or a razor that is stamped Solingen Extra, or just one of these two things. I can't believe I've got the only one. With all of you guys put together I bet the razors that are owned and passed thru our hands has got to be in the 100,000+ and still no info. Guess I'll put it in the log as "no name, Solingen Extra" and from 1890's as it don't say England, so that's the best guess I can make to its date.
Thanks to all that might have spent a little time looking for this or other razors like it. Just a generic Solingen razor but close to one of a kind I guess. BTW, I put it on the stones tonight and got an excellent edge on it. Going to try for a test shave tomorrow morning. Thank you all and this great straight razor forum!
And thanks to Boochie for selling it to me at a rock bottom price. Too bad I dropped it and dinged the edge when opening the box. BTW, I didn't lose any real size to the blade Boochie. You would have to measure it with a micrometer to see the difference. Still measures over 15/16 at the widest part. and this thing has got some steal in it. Checking my log, the spine is the fourth thickest razor I have. Behind a Fili and a couple Joseph Rodgers.

Thanked: 634Glad you did not lose too much blade. I can't believe no one on the site can identify the razor. Like you say, "it is a one of a kind". Sold at a low price worth a fortune. Maybe you can retire on it. Just kidding. Enjoy the shave.
