Default Koraat 14 2.0 – For Heavy Beards

A while back, I posted my impressions of Ulrik’s 14 2.0 blades. I stated in my post that Ulrik’s new 14 2.0 razor was excellent but also had to give a nod to how well my Filly EPBD performed on my beard type. If you’re interested, here’s a link to that post: https://straightrazorpalace.com/razo...ml#post1808590

After posting those impressions, Ulrik worked extensively with me on a prototype 14 2.0 grind for heavy beard types like mine (I sent Ulrik an EPBD so that he could evaluate the grind and etc.).

Ulrik’s 14 2.0 prototype grind arrived three weeks ago, and I have almost shaved exclusively with the razor during that time. I’ve put the blade through a variety of paces: In addition to my normal daily shaves, several times I shaved with the razor after going 2 and 3 days between shaves.

Bottom line up front: Ulrik’s prototype grind for heavy, tough beards on my 14 2.0 nails it! The razor has performed beautifully in all the testing I did and with all the different soaps I used. While Ulrik’s 14 2.0s are outstanding razors, his grind for heavy beards takes the razor to an even higher level—WOW!

If you’re considering a 14 2.0 and have a tough, heavy beard, without reservations, I highly recommend this superb grind! Or as my soap bro Andrew (Phrank) might put it, “Lord Thunderin’ Jesus, buy the razor with this grind!”

A big public shout out to you, Ulrik! Thank you very much for working with me on this project: My face and beard also both thank you for creating such a beautiful performing razor—you are the man!!!

Thank you for this follow up! I had been admiring the 14.2 since I picked up my Koraat the other day. But my beard really is thick and funky. Ulrik is gonna have another of these to pot out for sure. Love the look of these razors.

I also have a fast-growing, coarse beard, now white in color. I like using full hollow, extra hollow, and bellied grinds. I have a couple of Brian Brown bellied grinds that work quite well with my beard. From the looks of the photos above I suspect Ulrik's new profile would work every bit as well. Maybe one day, I will decide to add one of these to my collection.

    Enjoy your new razor!

My tired old eyes can't see the difference in the grind as compared to the standard 14 2.0. Can you speak to what is different? Also I don't see an option for this new grind for tough, heavy beards on the website. Any idea as whether it is going to be one of the grind options with the Konfigurator?

Could be a trick of the light but I see a very faint smile to the blade which I understand would help with heavier beard. But, that’s just an amateur eye.
I don’t think it’s in the standard order sheet yet as it’s described as a prototype grind. Send it in as a write in request if your ordering one. Ulrick is the kind of guy who will quickly tell you what’s up. He really is customer focused for how busy he is. I’d even venture a bet he will chime in before to long to this thread.

    Hello,

SemperFi thank you for this great review! I am so glad that the grind works so good for your heavy beard.

And thanks to all of you for your kind comments.

As some have noticed, the grind is not yet available in our configurator, but I will soon add it. But it is of course allready available on request.

In regard to the difference to our other grinds. This grind is made like our extra hollow grind, but using a larger wheel for the grind near the edge area. This result in a much more stiffer edge which is rather convex shaped than concave. This edge is strong enough even for the toughest beard. The hollow ground itself is very thin so there is still an overall flexibility to the blade, giving it gentleness and a lot of sound while shaving.
You can see the difference on the chart below.

Thank you for the explanation. Sounds like the extra full hollow for heavy beards would be an excellent choice for us who like extra full hollow grinds even if you do not have a heavy beard.
