    Default plating

Often razors seem to be chrome plated, are some older razors silver plated, I ask so that I can properly clean some older razors without damaging them

Gold wash as an accent but typically not plated with chrome or silver. 0000 steel wool and mothers, when combined with elbow grease is a great starting point.

I don't think I've ever seen a chrome or silver plated razor.
Carbon steel can be polished to shine like chrome though.
    How about a picture?

I've never heard of chrome or silver plated blades.

However, some manufacturers turned out nickel coated blades in order to save on the cost of polishing the steel and finishing the blades correctly. I've got a couple of Claus razors with plated blades. If I have time this afternoon, I'll see about snapping a couple quick photos to add to the thread.

One source I found online claims that the nickel plated blades were generally forged with inferior steel that's brittle and prone to micro chipping and thus almost always make poor shavers. You can read that webpage here -- the relevant section begins with a bullet point labeled, "-Avoid razors with nickel plating". You'll have to scroll down some to find it. The author also includes some pictures of plated blades.

Please don't take this the wrong way

But Coticule.be is NOT an end all be all source, and it is simply an opinion much like any other

Plated Blades were out there, the only time I have ever actually seen one and held one is was a Geneva but it was an "Advertising" blade from a Political campaign never meant to be used for shaving.

Common sense tells us that Plating would not be conducive to the micron sized edges used in SR shaving, there is also some misinterpretation of what is meant by "Plating" vs "Etching" plating like we here in the US think of as Nickel plated would not work well at all and would be quite susceptible to corrosion at the edge and the spine after honing it away

But Yes there are Plated Blades out there..

Just to be clear, are you talking about safety razors or straight razors???
    Also, pictures would be helpful.

That might be the most brilliant question of the thread

I honestly went right to SR's without even thinking

    Thanks Joshua
